Learning about investing for the first time means facing a steep learning curve. When dealing with new terminology, negotiating your way through a foreign language is an extra challenge. Of course, we can find books and info online in English. However, opening an investment account in Korea means dealing with a lot of not-basic Korean language.

Finding Events, Gigs, and Clubs Online

Seoul is one of the biggest cities in the world, yet it’s not a regular on the touring circuit for international acts. Some of the big bands do make it here, sometimes off the back of Fuji Rock in Japan. Up-and-coming acts pass through too, but they don’t seem to be well-publicized.

Favorite K-Pop Songs of a Person Who Doesn’t Listen to K-Pop

When I became interested in Korea in the late 90s, K-pop was barely a thing, and the Korean Wave (Hallyu 한류) was just getting started. Today, K-pop is the reason many people visit Seoul or learn Korean. And although pop isn’t my genre of choice, I’m not immune to a great melody or some precision dancing. The following songs were impossible to avoid on the streets of Seoul and ended up fixed in my memory.

Seoul Bike

Seoul’s bike sharing service, Seoul Bike, or Ddareungi (따릉이), has been around a few years. You can’t go far in Seoul without noticing the green and white docking stations and bicycles. I’ve only started using it recently because where I used to live wasn’t as good for cycling; north of the Han River, a lot of neighborhoods have narrow sidewalks and hills.

Must-eat Foods in Korea

One of the best things about living in Seoul is, for sure, the food. When people visit from other countries, I don’t recommend many tourist attractions or activities. Instead, I tell them to go places and eat things.

Here is my list of must-eat foods in Korea. They are a fraction of what is available but eating them would give a Korean food newbie a good start.

Mobile Phone Service in Korea

My contract for mobile phone service expired, and my phone is getting old too, so recently I looked into my options.

I had been on KT’s Data Choice 43.8 (데이터선택43.8) plan, and with a one-year contract I was getting a 25% discount. I was paying about 33 000 won per month which gave me unlimited minutes and messages, and three gigabytes of data. It also ‘allowed’ me to collect points in the KT Membership program and use them to get various discounts.
